You've probably heard the standard business advice a thousand times, especially in this online space: "Niche down. Specialize. Focus on one thing."
And yes, there's truth in that advice, especially when you are starting out. It is important to know exactly who you are helping. Clarity helps your message land, and focusing prevents you from spinning in circles. Specialization builds authority.
But here's what I've learned after several years in the online space:
This advice isn't as black and white as it seems and I challenge that thinking. Here's why....
The Problem with Either/Or Thinking
Most advice like this forces us into boxes. You're either a coach OR a course creator. You work outside the home OR you're a stay-at-home mom. You're either heart-led OR profit-focused.
I believe there are times we must choose. But in this online space, this either/or thinking keeps us small, stuck, and often swirling. It tells us there's only one "right" way to build a business and we are only ONE thing.
So, again, I challege the linear thinking.
What if you don't fit in just one box? What if you're an outside-the-box thinker? What if there is a lot of depth to you?
Welcome to the world of both/and - the reality of being a multidimensional, and multipassionate, entrepreneur.
You Don't Have to Choose Just One Passion
You can be both a creative AND a strategist. A coach AND an author. A speaker AND a course creator. A writer AND a podcaster. A healer AND a thought leader.
People want to put us in neat categories because it makes marketing feel easier and clearer. But for many of us - especially women in midlife - choosing just one thing feels stifling.
We've lived full, complex lives. We've evolved. We have layers and depth.
Let's face it... we are complex! When you've spent decades gathering wisdom, learning, leading, mothering, and reinventing yourself, it makes perfect sense that you'd be multi-passionate. As Marie Forleo says, "You're not a hot mess - you're multi-passionate."
The Myth of the Single Ideal Client
Here's another business "rule" that needs questioning: the idea that you can only have one ideal client.
A mentor recently said something that changed everything for me... most of us actually have more than one ideal client. Well, that resonates! Doesn't that just make you breathe a little easier?
GAME CHANGER!
Most successful entrepreneurs actually serve more than one ideal client.
And that's not wrong - it's strategic. It's expansion!
You might work with:
New entrepreneurs AND seasoned coaches
Women navigating a career transition to entrepreneurship AND empty nesters starting online businesses
Wellness coaches AND mindset mentors who both need to learn video confidence to grow their businesses
This doesn't mean your message is scattered. It means your brand has depth.
When your message stems from your core mission - like helping women find their voice or helping others own their experience and expertise - your offers can speak to different people at different stages without losing focus.
So, if your mission is empowering women to step into their authority - that mission can serve the new entrepreneur finding her confidence AND the seasoned professional pivoting to coaching. Same core message, different applications. You can create an ascension ladder to have your
ideal clients can grow with you.
The new entrepreneur you help today might become the seasoned coach you mentor tomorrow. The woman struggling with confidence might evolve into the thought leader ready for advanced strategies. When you embrace both/and thinking, you're not just serving different people - you're creating a journey for people to grow alongside your business. And that is powerful.
I am learning that so much of our growth is connecting with people who are several steps ahead of me and being in their proximity and orbit! It has been the most powerful way for me to learn. It's not just a course and module - but connection and access to the person teaching. Again - both/and not either/or
Why Both/And Is Your Superpower
"Either/or" thinking limits possibilities. "Both/and" thinking creates them.
The most powerful businesses are born from integration, not elimination. You can be:
Both intuitive AND strategic
Both personal AND professional in your messaging
Both heart-led AND profit-minded
Both a writer AND speaker
This isn't confusion - it's congruence.
When you embrace your multidimensional nature, you're not diluting your message - you're deepening it. You're showing up as your whole self, and that authenticity is magnetic.
Your Multi-Dimensional Business Is Valid
If you've been told you need to "pick a lane," consider this your permission slip to build bridges between lanes instead.
Your complexity isn't a marketing problem - it's your competitive advantage. In a world full of one-dimensional businesses, your multidimensional approach stands out. People don't just buy your expertise - they buy you and your unique perspective that comes from your varied experiences. The entrepreneurs who thrive long-term? They're the ones who refuse to shrink themselves to fit into a box or someone else's definition. Plus, it is great to be a little disruptive today!
How will you use it to serve more people and create greater impact?
Ready to Embrace Both/And?
Stop apologizing for being "too much" or "all over the place." Start celebrating the depth and richness you bring to everything you do.
Marie Forleo says it best, "Being multipassionate isn’t your Achilles heel, it’s your superpower."
Do you agree or disagree? What resonates with you? I would love to hear how this lands for you.

Step Forward. Speak Up. Stand Out. Your go-to source for confidence, entrepreneurship, and using your voice to grow your business.
