Online Business Terms Made Simple

Online Business Words Defined

The world of online business and technology is full of words and jargon that can sometimes be confusing. As with any industry, it has a language of its own. So I thought I would break it down and simplify the often confusing terminology. When I first started, some of the words used to really confuse me, so I hope this helps you. It is a bit long, but feel free to copy and use it.

WHAT IS A....

Landing Page

It is an online place for people who are following you to LAND. It is kind of a special webpage that encourages your followers and visitors to do something-like sign up or buy something. A landing page is often (but not always) more focused on one thing, like an essay rather than a whole book. It usually has few or no menu buttons. That said, today, landing pages are being used as websites.SO... IT CAN BE USED AS YOUR WEBSITE, especially if you are starting out. This is what I have and I love it because it gives me a lot of flexibility. A lot of programs offer a variety of templates for landing pages (see below).

Laning pages

  • Tells you exactly what to do (like "Click Here")

  • Only talks about one thing

  • No distractions

You can create landing pages (more like a website) on these ALL IN ONE Platforms:Systeme.io (free and paid version). This is what I use. It is very robust (has a lot of features). HighLevel -I have not used this but know that it is popular and a very robust platform as well. Mastermind Business Hub (MBH)-for those of you who are a part of Dean Graziosi & Tony Robbins program.

Platforms specifically for landing pages and emails:

Mailchimp: Can make landing pages that connect directly to your email lists. *I used this when I first started but wanted more of an all-in-one.

MailerLite: Affordable email marketing tool with good landing page features. Free for up to 1,000 subscribers. I have experimented with this.

ConvertKit (now called Kit): Great for creators and bloggers, with a focus on email marketing. Canva: Known for design but also offers landing page template. Free & paid versions.

Website

Your whole online home with many pages. It's like your house where people can visit different rooms:

  • Front page (home)

  • About you page

  • What you sell pages (book)

  • Blog (where you share stories)

  • Podcast

  • How to contact you

  • Menu to get around

Websites have SEO capablity - meaning they are searchable. If someone typed in your name or your business name, your website will likely show up in a search.

Funnel

This one used to really confuse me. Simply put, it is the path you want visitors to follow. It has steps that lead to buying something. Often you hear people refer to this as top of funnel. This just means it has a starting point. It starts at the top like a funnel🌀

➡️First they find out about you

➡️Then they get interested

➡️Then they think about buying

➡️Finally they buy something

Getting People Interested:

Lead Magnet This is a word we hear a lot lately. This is just a free gift you give that leads to getting someone's email address. It is a "magnet" to attract followers to take action and get something like:

  • Free mini-books (e-books)

  • Helpful lists

  • Ready-to-use forms

  • Short lessons

  • Try-before-you-buy offers

  • Fun quizzes

  • Sign-ups for online classes

Lead Magnet Page

This is the actual page that is created to collect emails as described above. It is often a PDF, an or document of some kind that offers information in exchange for someone's email address, as discussed above. It is like a fisherman's that is hook cast out to hook you with bait (something you want) to they can catch your email address and reel you in😂Opt-in or Opt-in Page When someone says "yes, you can email me" by typing in their email address to get your free stuff. Often a single page is created to get someone to opt-in, like "click here" to sign up for my newsletter.

Knowing Your Customers & Clients

Ideal Client

The ideal client is WHO you want to help the most! It is also the perfect person who would love your product the most. You can describe them. You understand them. You know their challenges. It is the person you are speaking to on a video or podcast or writing. Often, it is you 5, 10, 15 years ago.

Avatar

A persona. A made-up person who represents your ideal customer. You give them:

  • A name (Mine is the REDLO WOMAN). Redlo=oldeR spelled backward.

  • An age

  • Problems they need solved

  • Things they like and don't like

  • Where they shop

  • What social media they use

It's like creating a character for a story, except this character is the person most likely to buy from you.

Social Media Words

Facebook Intro/Bio

The short "about me" on your Facebook page tells people who you are and what you do. The bio and intro are often interchangeable words. Instagram calls it bio. Facebook refers to both.

Content Pillar (s)

A big piece of information that you can break into smaller pieces, like cutting a pizza into slices to share. Often these pillars are the FOUNDATION of what you post, write and speak about. They are the main topics you cover on a regular basis like the chapters of a book.

Social Proof

Ways to show that other people like what you do:

  • Nice comments from happy customers

  • Star ratings

  • Success stories

  • When people mention you online

Selling Words:

CTA (Call to Action)

The button or words that tell people what to do next:

  • "Buy Now"

  • "Get Your Free Guide"

  • "Book a Call"

Conversion Rate

How many visitors actually do the thing you want them to do. If 100 people visit and 10 sign up or buy, that's a 10% conversion rate.

ROI (Return on Investment)

How much money you make compared to how much you spent. If you spend $10 and make $20, that's good ROI! It is also how much time you spend on something and the return you get for that time.

A/B Testing

Trying two different versions to see which one works better. Like having two lemonade stands with different signs to see which sells more.

Email Sequence &Terminology

CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

It is like a super-organized digital notebook that businesses use to keep track of their customers.

Imagine you run a lemonade stand:

  • You write down who buys lemonade and what flavors they like.

  • You remember who comes back often and who hasn’t been around in a while.

  • You send a thank-you note or a special discount to loyal customers.

A CRM does all this automatically for businesses! It helps them remember customers, send emails, and keep track of who likes what, so they can grow their business without forgetting important details Autoresponder

Emails that automatically go out and get sent (you don't have to do anything( when someone does something.

Email Sequence Think of it like a TV series: A series of emails that go out in order, like episodes of a TV show.

  • Episode 1 (Welcome Email): Introduces you and what they can expect.

  • Episode 2 (Helpful Tip): Shares a valuable insight or resource.

  • Episode 3 (Engagement): Encourages them to take action (reply, follow you, etc.).

  • Episode 4 (Offer or Next Step): Invites them to a course, service, or deeper connection.

Just like a TV show that keeps you watching, an email sequence keeps people engaged,

Segmentation

Putting people into different groups so you can send them emails they'll actually care about.

Tech Words

Your website's address, like www.yourname.com. This is something you purchase and own!

Hosting

The computer space you rent to store your website so people can see it.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Ways to help your website show up when people search for things on Google by using specific words that your ideal client, customer or audience might search or use.

Numbers that tell you who visited your website, what they did there, and if they bought anything.
