Howling Like A Coyote: A Metaphor For Using Your Voice

Is it Time to HOWL Like a Coyote?
5 Lessons Nature Teaches Us About Using Our Voice

Nature Doesn’t Whisper. Neither Should You.

I’ve always loved nature — the sounds, the rhythms, the quiet wisdom it holds. Most mornings, I step outside early with coffee in hand, taking in the stillness of the day before it begins and listening. Recently, it’s been the sound of the coyotes that has caused me to pause...

They howl.
Loudly.Unapologetically.Together.Unmistakably alive.

And it struck me… what a powerful metaphor this is for our own voices - especially as women in midlife. Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned to quiet our voices to please others, not disrupt, be the good girl, keep the peace and stay small.

Then we hit midlife...an awakening begins to roar inside. We know we’re meant for more. Just like those coyotes, we have something wild and true within us. We have something to say! We don't need to stay silent. We just have to remember (or maybe learn) how to howl.

Let’s explore what the coyote’s howl can teach us about using our voice in this season of life:

1. Communication → Claiming Your Space

Coyotes don’t whisper. When they howl, they are saying: “I’m here.” They’re not asking for permission to exist. They’re announcing their presence. Using your voice - whether in your relationships, your business, or your everyday choices - is about doing the same. You don’t have to be the loudest. You just need to be YOU- authentically present.

2. Connection → Speaking to Be Understood

Coyotes howl to communicate with their pack. They’re not just making noise — they’re building connection. As women, we often underestimate the power of our stories and our words. But when you share your truth, you give someone else permission to do the same.

Your voice creates community. It helps others feel seen. And it reminds you that you’re not alone.

3. Territory → Setting Boundaries

Howling also marks boundaries. It’s a clear, unmistakable way of saying: “This is my space.”

Your voice can do that too.
It can say yes.
It can say no.
It can be loud.
It can be direct but clear.
It protects what is yours. It protects what matters.

Learning to set boundaries with your voice isn’t selfish - it’s sacred!

4. Celebration → Honoring Your Wins

Did you know coyotes sometimes howl after a successful hunt? It is fascinating! It sounds like a tribal, communal chant and song. It’s their way of celebrating. So often, we wait for permission to be proud of ourselves, especially those of us who are high achievers, conditioned to just keep going or not take credit for the things you have done. But you deserve to celebrate your wins -especially the ones no one sees. We forget to celebrate our wins and the progress we have made, don't we? Speak them out loud. Honor your progress. Let your voice remind you how far you’ve come! Dance. Sing. Chant. Celebrate!

5. Identity → Embracing Your Unique Sound

Every coyote has a different and unique howl. That’s how they recognize each other. As humans, your voice is the same. No one has it! You have your tone, your inflections, your message, and your expression - it is uniquely yours. You don’t need to sound like anyone else! You just need to sound like you and be proud of who you are. Be proud of the beautiful sound you can make!

When you own your story, your quirks, your heart, you step into something powerful and your truth. Silence keeps you small.
