Don’t Be Upset When People Copy You: Do These 3 Things Instead

You Are the Original. They Can Copy the What, but They Can’t Copy the Who.

Someone just stole your content, your words, your brand vibe… maybe even your exact offer. What do you do?

Ouch. It stings. You feel violated. Disrespected. And sometimes just flat-out annoyed and a little angry, right?

Dan Sullivan says it best,"If you're not being copied, you're probably not doing anything worth copying."

That perspective changes everything for you and me, doesn't it? Because the moment people start mimicking your ideas, it means you are a thought LEADER. You've stepped into leadership. You are doing something innovative. You are challenging the status quo. You are creating something impactful. YOU are becoming visible. This is SO exciting.

I've lived with this small mindset without even realizing it. So I hope some of my lessons will help you too. We are always on a growth journey!

Years ago, my husband invested in Dan Sullivan's coaching. He paid a whole lot of money back then for that program and learned invaluable tools and information. At the time, I didn't quite realize the impact that program would have on us long term. But looking back now, I see we've been living these principles for years.

In fact, in our dating days, we would drive to downtown Los Angeles or what was once the Forum (think LAKERS) just to hear Zig Ziglar speak live. Those were the seeds being planted. The mindset. The growth. The understanding that your mindset, message, mission and voice are all worth building and protecting - with grace.

So instead of spiraling into frustration when someone copies your work, here are 3 powerful things you can do instead that elevate you and protect your peace (as Trent Shelton says).

1. Give Credit Where It's Due - Even When Others Don't

This is a BIG one for me! It might sound backward, but when you consistently credit others for ideas that inspire you, you're leading by example. You're showing integrity and reminding your audience that originality is a mindset, not just a message. It honors your mentors and those you have learned from.

"You don't get paid for what you do. You get paid for the value you create."Dan Sullivan

People may copy your style or format, but they can't replicate the unique value you bring to the table. Especially when you're operating from a place of honesty and intention. Therefore, if someone else "borrows" from your work without acknowledgment, let them (as Mel Robbins says)! And let that fuel your commitment to ALWAYS act with character!

2. Focus on Your Next-Level Ideas

When someone copies you, it means you're a few steps ahead. Stay there. Instead of obsessing over what was taken, shift your focus to what's next. Keep evolving. Keep innovating. Let them chase your old ideas while you're out creating new ones that are even more aligned, elevated, and powerful.

Dan Sullivan talks a lot about this idea of staying in your unique ability - which means living in your zone of genius and trusting that what you're creating is uniquely yours. No one can do it the way you can.

The world doesn't need more copies (we now have AI clones for that). The world needs more people showing up in their unique brilliance.

So let them copy. You've already moved on.

3. Turn It Into Content and Connection

Yep. Turn the whole thing into a story, just like this blog. Because when people copy you, it gives you a chance to:

  • Speak to your audience about originality

  • Reinforce your message of integrity

  • Build deeper trust with the people who see you

The people who truly resonate with your voice and values? They'll know the real thing when they see it. They'll feel it. They'll stay. Those are the people you want.

Final Thoughts

Being copied can feel personal, but it's actually a reflection of your power. So don't let it steal your joy, momentum or growth. Yep, don't get stuck in a small mindset.

Think bigger! Think IMPACT. THEN...

  • Give credit. Always. Always. ALWAYS! Always as best you can! Find out where the quote came from and who said it. Give credit to your mentors!

  • Stay in your zone of genius and keep evolving.

  • Turn your experiences into fuel for deeper connection.

And most of all, remember this:

"The best way to protect your ideas is to keep creating better ones." - Dan Sullivan
