Ever feel like your brain just won’t stop spinning? Like you're stuck in a mental loop of overthinking, indecision, and doubt?
That “thought tornado” is exhausting - and more common than you might think.
Just the other day, I spoke with a woman who’s navigating a big transition in her life. She’s full of ideas and dreams, but she said something that stopped me in my tracks:
“I’m thinking so much, I can’t even think straight.”
She was stuck in her head-circling the same worries, second-guessing every option, and beating herself up for not moving forward. And it got me thinking…
How often do we find ourselves in that same swirl? Our thoughts get louder. Our confidence gets quieter. And before we know it, we’re in a full-blown mental fog.
When Overthinking Becomes the Storm
It’s like a storm is forming inside us—pressure building, visibility fading. And suddenly we feel paralyzed by all the noise in our minds.
Here’s the thing: Overthinking is often a sneaky form of procrastination and fear dressed in fancy clothes! It keeps us feeling “busy” when we’re actually just avoiding the decision we know we need to make.
But that lack of action? It’s costing us.
Our health
Our relationships
Our income
Our confidence
And yes, our self-worth
We question our value and worth. We wonder if we’re enough or even qualified! That fear of failure overrides us and we stay stuck because stuck feels safer than wrong!
But you want to know the real secret to breaking the cycle? Step Outside to Step Forward!
Get in Nature.
When you feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, and over-it-all… just go outside.
Take a walk.
Stand under a tree.
Breathe in fresh air.
Listen to the birds, the wind, or your favorite calming playlist.
There’s something healing that happens when we step away from the noise and reconnect with the earth beneath us.
And guess what? Science agrees.
A new Boston University School of Public Health study revealed: “Relaxing in a shady yard with trees gently swaying overhead might not just be good for your spirit—it could also be good for your brain.”
It is called GROUNDING. Get it nature. Take off your shoes. Put your feet on the ground!
So fun, right?
We’re not making this stuff up. Nature actually rewires our ability to focus and process clearly.
Here’s another truth I’ve learned—both personally and with my clients:
Your BEST ideas usually show up when you’re not trying to force them.
It’s not during the “sit down and figure it out” sessions.
It’s in the in-between moments—when your brain is at ease, your body is moving, you are relaxed and a little dopamine is flowing.
You’ve probably noticed this too. Clarity tends to sneak in when you're:
Driving
Showering
Grocery shopping
Walking or running
Lying awake at night
That’s no accident. Research shows that when our brains are at rest, and we’re doing something mindless or enjoyable, creativity flows more freely. It’s a gentle mix of distraction and relaxation that opens the door to insight.
Here’s What I Do (and Suggest for You)
Carry a notebook or open a notes app.
Your thoughts might be fleeting, but they matter. Write them down—judgment-free.
Don’t analyze or edit.
There’s a reason the thought or idea came to you. Honor it, explore it later.
Get outside regularly.
Find green space. Take the long way home. Watch the trees sway. Let your nervous system settle.
Trust the whisper.
When a gentle idea pops up, it’s often your deepest self nudging you forward. Listen.
Final Thought
It is never too late to step forward with a decision. You’re just in a fog. Allow the fog to clear to gain clarity and make your decision. The fog will lift. And when it does, everything will appear a little brighter, vivid, and clear!
I drive to my favorite little mountain town nearby when I need to clear my head. I wander. I get my favorite coffee. I stroll through the the garden nursery, smell the fresh pine, sit on a swing, and watch the clouds roll by! It's your turn. Go to the mountains, river or ocean. Wander through a park or garden.
You don’t have to think your way forward. Sometimes, you just have to step forward.
